The Ancient
Corporation of
St Pancras

The St Pancras Corporation Charity Society is a Registered Charity (Number 246544), which is
also affectionately known as The Ancient Corporation of St Pancras and The Wheelbarrow Club.

The oldest dining club in Great Britain, also affectionately known as ‘The Wheelbarrow Club’.
Non-profit organisation Registered Charity no. 246544

Established in 1689 in Chichester, our ancient corporation was originally founded to celebrate the coming of William of Orange to the throne. As a group of like-minded individuals, the corporation gathered regularly for social events, community events & fellowship. Today, over 330 years later, we still enjoy the same activities. The Corporation is famous locally for it’s annual dinner, Christmas walk and annual Summer BBQ, for those who can remember, the Corporation also used to run an annual Wheelbarrow race through Chichester city centre on a Saturday Morning!

A Traditional Dining club

As was the tradition of many dining clubs of the time, we continue to have our own ‘Downtown Mayor’ and Officers, of which there are many, as a ‘mock’ council. But don’t worry, the real Chichester council approve and have been, and are, members of our club. The Club is run by an Executive Committee of twelve Aldermen and Burgesses chosen from the Officers of the Corporation and chaired by the Mayor who is elected at the AGM and holds office for two years. By tradition, the election of the Mayor is confirmed by a vote at the Annual Dinner. Meet our members here.

Why ‘The Wheelbarrow Club’?

Our most notable event of the year, our famous annual dinner, is what gave us our nickname, The Wheelbarrow Club. As the story goes, apprentices used to wait outside the annual dinners with wheelbarrows to take their masters home if they were unable to walk. But there is no such evidence to support this story, and we just can’t imagine why they wouldn’t have been able to walk…
